For a first visit, build a trip around two bases rather than a checklist of cities. Our suggested ten-day route pairs Tokyo with Kyoto: enough contrast to make the journey feel varied, without repacking every morning. The day allocations below are editorial suggestions, not a packaged tour or a claim of firsthand experience.
Tokyo: choose a neighborhood, then explore
Tokyo rewards a little geographic planning. Asakusa brings temples and traditional shops into focus; Harajuku and Shibuya offer a different perspective through fashion and contemporary street life. Shinjuku combines a business district with smaller backstreets. Pick one area as the anchor of a day instead of repeatedly crossing the city.
Start with Asakusa and Sensoji if historic Tokyo is your priority. Give the visit room for a walk and a meal rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. On another day, pair Harajuku with Shibuya. Keep a separate block for an interest-led visit such as Akihabara’s electronics and anime culture. Our suggestion: schedule one major priority each morning and leave the afternoon flexible.

Kyoto’s appeal extends beyond a list of temples. Traditional wooden townhouses, neighborhood shrines and tea culture sit alongside modern daily life. Central Kyoto makes a useful starting point; southern Kyoto introduces Fushimi’s sake traditions and Uji’s tea culture. These are distinct outings, so resist placing every stop on the same day.
Use one day for a compact central route and another for an area outside it. JNTO recommends considering quieter visiting times and treating residential neighborhoods with care. Check current access before an early or late visit, respect photography restrictions and leave doorways clear. If the itinerary starts feeling crowded, remove a stop rather than rushing through all of them.

Days 1–2: arrive in Tokyo, settle in and explore one area close to your accommodation. Avoid a non-refundable activity immediately after an international arrival. Days 3–4: split your time between historic Tokyo and a contemporary neighborhood, keeping one afternoon for your own interests.
Day 5: travel to Kyoto and keep the evening simple. Days 6–8: plan a central Kyoto day, a southern-area outing and a slower day for places you want to revisit. Day 9: leave room for weather changes or an extra activity. Day 10: depart, or allow the necessary transfer time if your flight leaves from Tokyo. Compare arrival and departure airports before committing to this route.
Transport, timing and your travel budget
Tokyo has both Haneda and Narita airports, with different transfer options. Write down the actual airport, station and hotel address before arrival. For every hotel choice, compare the complete door-to-door journey instead of only the room price. A cheaper room can be a poor trade if it adds difficult transfers every day.
Build a budget from accommodation, intercity travel, local transport, food and paid activities. Compare individual rail tickets with any pass using your actual itinerary; do not assume a pass saves money. For seasonal trips, check the forecast and local event calendar before reserving activities. Leave a weather-flexible slot rather than making every day dependent on being outdoors.
Stay connected without planning around your phone
Save hotel addresses, booking confirmations and essential directions offline before leaving. Use mobile data for live route changes, translation and messages; move large photo backups to Wi-Fi if you want to conserve your allowance.
Before choosing an eSIM, check your exact device’s compatibility, carrier-unlock status, package validity and activation policy. Total-data and daily-allowance plans need different comparisons. Our Japan destination preview is linked below; retail sales are not open yet.
